We asked Director Joschka Laukeninks to tell us about the film. Here's what he had to say...

Tell us in 140 characters the synopsis of your film.

As a young child our protagonist is left by his mother and has to live with his violent father. He fights his way through adolescence and falls in love with the woman of his dreams and just as everything seems to be finally working out for him, a sudden event changes the course of his life forever. A story about how everything we love, everything we learn, everything we build, everything we fear, will one day be gone.

Where did the idea/script come from?

The idea was to create a very SHORT film that compresses an entire life story into 6 very intense minutes. And - by showing only the back of the protagonists head - creating a seamless transition, instead of taking the usual approach and just showing the aging of the protagonist in different chapters. This way we were able to create this kind of feeling that time never stops, it just keeps on running.

What part of the production process was the most rewarding? To be honest, the whole production process was stressful and full of obstacles. We had 17 shooting days - for only 6 minutes of film! We had to fight very hard to pull this off and - compared to other projects - there was never this easy-going „let’s just shoot and have some fun“ spirit. But I guess for a project like this, dealing with life and death and time in a universal way, it just had to be really hard. I think you can feel it when watching the film. What does the future hold for the film?

We’ll put BACKSTORY online very soon and just hope that it reaches as many people as possible.

BACKSTORY - Plays November 11 @ 12:05pm, Centre Theatre
